How to apply for an Erasmus+ youth exchange

An Erasmus+ youth exchange brings groups of young people from different countries together to learn through activities outside formal education. Participation is normally organised through a youth organisation, informal group or project partner, rather than by sending an individual application directly to the European Commission.

Start here: Find an organisation or project recruiting participants in your country. The official programme rules are in the Erasmus+ Programme Guide.

1. Find an exchange that is recruiting

Look for an announcement from an organisation involved in an approved youth exchange. Start with your National Agency, the European Youth Portal and established youth organisations. A general programme description is not the same thing as an open participant call.

2. Check whether you are eligible

Read the announcement carefully. Check the eligible countries, age range, place of residence, programme dates, required experience and language requirements. Do not assume that a project happening in Europe accepts applications from every country. Participating countries can differ depending on the action and funded project.

3. Understand the costs before applying

Look for information about travel reimbursement, accommodation, meals, insurance, participation fees and possible personal expenses. The organiser should explain what is covered and any reimbursement limits. Even a grant-funded project may require participants to pay certain costs upfront and claim them later.

4. Prepare a clear application

Some organisers use an online form; others ask for a short motivation statement or an interview. Explain why the topic interests you, what you can contribute to group activities and what you hope to learn. Be specific instead of writing generic claims about wanting to travel.

5. Confirm your place with the organiser

Submitting a form does not mean you have been selected. Wait for written confirmation, then ask about travel booking, insurance, accessibility, consent requirements, accommodation and any documents you must bring. Keep a copy of the original announcement and confirmation messages.

6. After the exchange

Ask your organiser whether the project uses Youthpass to recognise what you learned. Record useful contacts, skills and outcomes. These examples can strengthen future applications when described accurately.

Questions to ask before you apply

  • Is my nationality or country of residence eligible?
  • Is the activity funded, and which costs might I pay?
  • Who is the sending organisation in my country?
  • When is the deadline, including the time zone?
  • What documents or parental consent are required, if applicable?
  • When will I receive a selection decision?
